The Fellows have all finished reading Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, a work of profound environmental insight. Leopold bought a worn-out farm in Wisconsin’s Sand Counties in the 1930’s. During his years of owning the farm, he documented what he witnessed as the farm gradually healed itself. Leopold was a keen observer and thinker. His “Land Ethic” essay is a seminal work which presents a new ethic, the culmination of a lifetime of observation and reflection and a milestone in environmental thought. In this essay, Leopold articulates a new understanding of the value of the land and our relationship to the “land,” which includes the water and air, through which we can conserve, appreciate, and value our environment.

This is part one of the evening the Fellows spent with Captain Cyrus, Admissions Director at the United States Naval Academy. Captain Cyrus engaged the Fellows on the topic of leadership, and through discussion, helped them understand how they can best develop their own leadership skills and styles.

The Fellows were invited by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to attend their Legislative Reception on February 6, 2012. Fellows spent about two hours speaking with members of Virginia’s General Assembly while they advocated for the Bay.
