Courtney Byler ’15

Courtney’s first Bay project was to investigate crabs, crabbing regulations, and the economies of crabbing. Currently, she and Chris Hornbuckle are leading our discussion of William Warner’s Beautiful Swimmers. She and Chris were both impacted by their first Bay Fellows experience on Smith Island, MD. It was there that they discovered their interest in crabs.

Courtney is currently partnering with Fellow Wilson Ford on an oyster restoration project. They have placed 6,000 spat (baby oysters) in the Lynnhaven and Lafayette Rivers. They will compare growth rates before planting their oysters on area restoration reefs.

Courtney is a ninth-grade student who also is a three-season athlete: varsity field hockey, JV basketball, and varsity lacrosse.
