The EDI Fellows had the opportunity to meet with folks from the New E3 School here in Norfolk, VA via Zoom. Our conversation started with Mrs. Lisa Howard, President and CEO of E3 and New E3 School, discussing the history and goals of E3 and then turned toward to the research and ideas that Kate Matthews and other researchers at University of Virginia applied to the layered curricula for STREAM ages 1-5. Teachers at the New E3 School, Jazmyn McGee and Allyson Schmidt also shared videos of how the curricula are applied and their experiences with the children.
After the Zoom meeting, EDI Fellows reflected on how they could incorporate some of the curriculum elements in their Aftercare sessions with older students in grades 4-6. Dr. Call also brought up how activities might be helpful for the Technical Literacy project. Overall, we are super thankful that folks at the New E3 School could chat with us and we look forward to meeting with them in the future to learn about best practices for teaching STEM curriculum to younger children and getting them Kindergarten ready.
