Favorite adult book recommendation — Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Don’t be turned off by its length or standing as a “classic.” One of Dickens’s last novels, it has him working at the height of his powers and warrants readings at different points in one’s life. All 9th graders at Academy read it and (we hope) emerge with a new understanding of 19th-century Britain and, more importantly, the values that add up to a meaningful life.
Favorite young adult book recommendation — Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt
I thank Mrs. Paul for suggesting this one to me about six years ago. It’s a superb coming-of-age story about an eighth-grader named Doug whose family has just moved to Marysville, New York in 1968. The novel takes on some heavy issues but is often humorous, and it affirms the life-changing power of friendship. (Recommended for Grades 6-9)
